Everyday services

The practical things that make a trip run smoothly.

Groceries

  • Harbour Island MarketsA newer, higher-end grocery store with a good selection for special diets, plus cured meats and higher-end cuts. Nesbitt Street.242-333-3628

Health

  • Harbour Island Community ClinicThe Ministry of Health clinic. A good, lower-cost option for everyday care. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. South Street.242-333-2227
  • Briland Premier Medical CenterA private family clinic run by Dr. Justin Albury, a friend of ours. A good place for sniffles, ear infections, minor stitches and general family medical needs on vacation. It costs more than the community clinic but is a fuller clinic. Nesbitt and Coconut Grove Streets.242-699-5451 · brilandpremier.com

For a serious emergency, a medical evacuation means leaving Harbour Island for Eleuthera and beyond. The clinics can help coordinate it, but it is a big undertaking, so travel insurance is smart.

Money

  • Royal Bank of CanadaThe island's only bank, with an ATM, directly behind Valentines Resort. Dunmore Street.242-333-4219

Pets & animals

  • Briland Animal RescueWhere to meet potcake puppies and island kittens and take one home with you. The rescue is always in need of donations and support.brilandanimalrescue.org · 242-553-5395
  • The Harbour Island HorsesMeet the horses on the beach at Coral Sands and chat with Marty, who looks after them. He can set up a time for you to come back and ride, or sometimes fit you in on the spot. It is very informal, so rides cannot be booked far in advance.
